An Australia Place in Kota Kinabalu? Yes! there is. The Australia Place is located at foothill of Signal Hills near the Atkinson Clock Tower next to the old police station. This is the few places of modern Kota Kinabalu City that is not on the reclaim land. The jungle beside the australia place has remain undisturbed for many years, and monkeys still inhabit in this area. The place was so named, as this was the place where the Australian soldiers camped when they landed here some 60 years ago, toward the end of second world war. The name has fondly remained unchanged till today.
Print shops used to fill up and down on the street of Australia Place, and this was where we KKlites did all our print job. Today many of these print shops still remain here, and new business like hotel, hostel, tour agent, and cafe have been added to this place. More and more tourists have been spotted around here too.
Newly opened Garden Hotel has room starting from RM 80 (single) and standard room at RM 100 (double).
Backpacker hostels have mushroom all over KK city for the last 5 years, and there are about 5 bed and breakfast at the Australia Place. The ever popular Lucy's Homestay is probably one of the oldest Bed & Breakfast in Kota Kinabalu. Backpacker Hostels or Bed & Breakfast in Kota Kinabalu mostly has single bed with price starting at RM 20.
New comers like Travelers' Light, Borneo Backpacker, and Kinabalu Lodge, and Tropicana Lodge have also set up their business at Australia Place. Australia Place offers a quiet and peaceful rest for travellers, because of it vicinity, being tucked away at a corner of the city, a jungle on one side and a police station near by. On Sunday morning, Australia Place being next to Gaya Street, just walk across the road and start exploring the Sunday market at Gaya street.
Two cafes have also set up there shop here. The Museum Cafe, more of a kopitiam, is a must visit destination, and it has been operating since 1945. Museum Cafe has old pictures of Kota Kinabalu as far back as 1911, and some museum items. Charcoals burnt toast and coffee brewed from long stocking are the specialty here, and these two items smell so good too.
Yesterday cafe serves western and local food and has beers for the thirsty travellers too. While in KK do walk down to Australia Place for a visit.
