Emperor's Delight

The best ramen restaurant in Kota Kinabalu.

Talk about mouth watering ramen (la mian) in Kota Kinabalu, will eventually lead one to this well established eatery called Emperor's Delight. Located at the far end of Jalan Pantai (Beach Street) and just 30 metres away from Little Italy, Emperor's Delight serves some of the best ramens in town. As many as 12 different types of ramens with various combinations are available, and the more popular ones are ramen with beef in special herbal soup, ramen with braised meat, ramen with minced meats and mushroom with spicy sauce, and ramen with seafood. A bowl of ramen starts from RM 8.

Imported cooks can be seen busy preparing the ramen at the kitchen which is divided by a large glass wall. Every move of the cooks can be scrutinised from every dinning table. With agile movements, a well practice rountine, the chief cook streches, pulls, twists the dough, before it is expertly cut into fine pieces of ramen. Interested in another look of a cook routine, just order some ramens and you will get to see the cook at work again. Emperor's Delight is also a restaurant that resembles Hong Kong style restaurants.

Another specialty of Emperor's Delight is the Shanghai Steamed Pork Dumpling (Xiao Long Bao), which is a highly recommended item at this restaurant. This Shanghai Steamed Pork Dumpling comes with four small dumplings (Bao) in a classic bamboo steamer container (long). Just a bite at one of these dumplings will draw out the very delicious sauce from within, and that is enough to make one think of the next dumpling. The Shanghai Steamed Pork Dumpling is price at RM 5 per long.

Emperor's Delight has a few special side dishes prepared for some extra nibbling to go with the ramens. These dishes include the Deep Fried Crispy Prawn (RM 12), Braised Minced Pork Meat ball (RM 8), Fried Pork Meat with Pineapple sauce (RM 8), and Sweet and Sour Chicken (RM 8). Nice and simple soups like Sweet and Sour Szenchuan Style, West Lake Style Beef Soup, and Fresh Prawn and Siew Pak Choy Soup are also served at Emperor's Delight. All soups are at RM 5 each.

Emperor's Delight has an interior that is sleek and modern. Black, Red, and white are the main hues that blanketed the whole interior. These colours cover the tables, chairs, floor as well as many of the utensils. A big 15 feet wood carving with ancient Chinese art rests at the centre of the side wall. The restaurant is air-conditioned, and the service here is fast and prompt. Definitely well worth a visit.

How to get here? Located on Jalan Pantai (Beach Street), Emperor's Delight is just opposite Wisma Sabah, and with an Esso Station in front. Another near-by landmark is the old Capitol Hotel. The place can be easily reached by foot from many hotels in the city, or simply call a taxi.
