Kipandi Butterfly Park

Talk about rare butteflies, beetles and orchids, why not pay a visit to Kipandi Butterfly Park. Located just 36 km away from Kota Kinabalu, about 40 minutes by car, this is the nearest butterfly parks in the region. On the way to Kipandi Butterfly Park at Kampung Moyog via the Penampang-Tambunan road visitors will be treated with a scenic view of the Crocker Range where lush green forests and rolling hills are the common sight. At the entrance of Kipandi Butterfly Park, at an altitude of 700 metres, vistors are greeted by the cool air from the Crocker Range. The Kipandi Butterfly Park consists of three sections: the butterfly enclosure, the flora garden and the insectarium. A friendly ranger will also be provided to help visitors to spot and name the various rare butterflies and plants.

At the top of a small hill about100 metres away from the entrance is the butterfly enclosure, a netted structure. The enclosure at Kipandi Butterfly Park is probably the biggest in Sabah with an enclosed area of 15,000 square feet (estimated). As many as 30 to 40 species of butterflies can be seen flying freely arround the enclosure sipping nectar from one fruit tree to another. One of the rarest butterflies in Borneo is the Rajah Brooke (Trogoneptra Brookiana) which can be easily spotted at the enclosure. Others special butterflies are Golden Birdwing (Troides Amphrysus) and the Peacock swallow-tail (Papilio Karna). The best time to view these butterflies is in the morning from 9:30 to noon, when butterflies are at their most energetic display. Have those cameras ready too.

The flora garden, a joint conservation project with the Sabah Wildlife Department, is just a short walk from the butterfly enclosure. Venture into the enclosed garden one can see the rare slipper orchid, and the interesting “bunga hantu' which is simply translated “ghost flower” in English. And with the ranger's help there are many different species of plants and flower to explore. Some 400 species of orchids, 15 species of nepenthes (pitcher plant) and 28 species of Hoyas are collected and displayed so far.

At a small hut beside the flora garden hangs a big white cloth measuring some 4ft X 10ft. and is about 3 feet above ground. This is the location for the night insect show, but this must be arranged with the park earlier. The insect show is done by strong lights glaring on the big white cloth, and many insects will come out from the dark and remain perched on the white cloth, attracted by the strong light.

The small insectarium beside the butterfly enclosure houses over 800 species of butterflies and 1,800 species of beetles. Some of these are endemic to the Crocker Range. One special beetle, Heteropteres, is always the centre of attention here, as it has a back that resembles the face of a Chinese deity. Cyclommatus Chewi (beetle) only found in the Crocker Range, and the rare stick insect (phasmidea) are also displayed here. Other collected species on exhibition are allomalla, buprestidae, cerambycidae, cetonidae, harpalidae, and lucanidae.

Many of these collections belong to Dr. Chew, who has been collecting these beetle specimen, since he started studying beetles about 20 years ago. A free programme for school children to visit the park and learn more about the entomofauna of Sabah can also be arranged. All students must wear school uniform and an application letter from the school should be sent to the Park office at least two weeks earlier. A cafe with a sourvenir shop is available for the visitors to have a hot drink, and enjoy the view in front of them.
