Since the quota of 120 visitors per day was introduced to Sipadan Island by Sabah Park in 2005 to protect the marine life and environment there, going to dive in Sipadan is not a straight forward answer any more. During the peak seasons most dive operators will ask you to stay with them for a minimum four or five days before they would bring you to dive at the wonderful world of Sipadan. Since you will be here for a few days why not choose and stay at Borneo Divers Mabul Resort, a three-star resort at Mabul, about 20 minutes by speed boat from Sipadan.
During non-peak period guests might be able to dive more than one day in Sipadan. Here's how "Borneo Divers" explains:
This is how it works - If we have only 30 pax on location, our permit is 14 per day, with 2 days rotation, 14 x 2 days we actually are able to bring all the guests to dive at Sipadan every 2 1/4 days during your 5 days 4 nights stay. Thus you have more than 1 day chance to dive at Sipadan or another word you will probably dive at Sipadan at 1 1/2 day or 2 days, this all depends if you get the extra Sipadan permit on which day of your trip, if you get the extra day in between, then you will have 2 full days or 8 boat dives.
Apart from Sipadan Island, "Borneo Divers" also has boat dive trips to Mabul, Kapalai, Siamil and Mantabuan. All dives are led by professional dive masters. Unlimited jetty buddy house reef dives are available at the resort's New Jetty.
Borneo Divers Mabul Resort offers 30 classy units of semi-detached room, either twin-share or double beds and has a private verandah overlooking the Celebes Sea. Each room comes with air-conditioner, ceiling fan, dressing table and a private hot & cold water shower bathroom. Deluxe rooms are decorated with special local sarong and has added facilities such as coffee & tea making facilities and hair dryer. The resort also offers 5 units of comfortable tents which are air-conditioned for the adventurous divers.
Facilities at Borneo Divers Mabul Resort include restaurant, bars (3 units), event hall, full service dive centre, professional underwater video and filming centre, library and free Wifi Service. To pamper yourself head over to the Gazebo, where guests can enjoy a beach side massage or manicure & pedicure, and can feel free to swim at the beautiful blue colour floor swimming pool. Borneo Divers Mabul Resort is the only accommodation in Mabul that has a pool.

Mabul island, surrounded by Celebes Seas and white sandy beaches, is located at the South Eastern coast of Sabah and it is perching on the edge of the Continental Shelf. Make famous by its many small and tiny sea creatures, "Mecca of Muck Diving" is a popular tag for Mabul Island. The underwater at Mabul houses some of the most incredible marine habitats that even divers today continue to discover new things.
How to get there? Fly from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau (40 minutes) and then take a coach for about 90 minutes to a coastal fishing town called Semporna. The boat ride from Semporna jetty to Mabul island is about 30- 40 minutes.
