Sandakan Backpackers

While many backpackers to Sandakan find Sepilok a better location to spend a night or two, for those who like the glamour lifestyle of the city they will find that Sandakan Backpackers is the place to be. Established in 2007, many travellers had spent their nights here and their appreciation of the place can be seen on the many words of thanks written on the staircase walls of the Sandakan Backpackers. People from countries around the world, such as Australia, Denmark, Finland, Japan, New Zealand, UK and the USA, each of them has dropped a few lines here, and if one has the times these lines are made for good reading material. Great location, good facilities, clean and stylish bedding, plus friendly and helpful staffs are all the good attributes for a pleasant stay at the Sandakan Backpacker hostel. If one needs tourist information, just ask the staffs.

Sandakan Backpackers is housed in the corner shoplot of the pristine waterfront area of the Sandakan Harbour Square. It occupies the first floor all the way to the roof top comprising eleven rooms in four levels. The first floor is where the reception, lobby, a computer, dining area and kitchen are located. The second floor are rooms and common washroom areas, which is the same for the third floor, while the fourth floor is a covered open area roof top. The first floor is a wonderful place to relax in the late afternoon, it has garden chairs that look out to the Sandakan harbour and the blue sea with fishing boats and cargo ships moving back and forth. At the centre of the roof top area is the TV lounge where a big bed is used for sitting. For some fun times, carrom, a pool table, chess sets on lovely crafted chest board tables, are some of the games provided by the establishment. The is also a small area for hanging clothes for those who prefer to do their own laundry.

Three dormitory rooms are located on the third floor. The dormitories are divided into a male, a female, and a mixed gender room. The dormitory can sleep six persons on three bunk beds. Rooms that are facing towards the town side, are a twin room, two double rooms, and two family rooms. Rooms that have sea front view are the single room and two double rooms. All the rooms have air-conditioners, except the single room which has a fan only. There are no private attached toilet in all the rooms, so guests will have to share the common bathrooms. While the dormitories are basic and clean, the private rooms have a little local touch for decoration. The sea front single and double rooms are upgraded with a bit of luxury in the form of having their own shower inside the room.

The Kitchen at Sandakan Backpackers is splendid not only tea and coffee are free flow for the guests, simple cooking is also allowed by the management who has equipped the kitchen with a microwave and an electric stove. The kitchen is neat and clean as the cutlery, plates and cups are all properly arranged. A bit of convenience for the guests as there is a small fridge for their food that needs cold storage. A computer room next to the dining room is equipped with two PCs, which are charged hourly at RM 5. At the lounge guests can enjoy many Astro TV channels with a 32” LCD television while sitting comfortably on the sofas.

Laundry service is also provided at RM 15 per kilo. While no curfew is practice here, the ground floor gate is closed at 12:00 am, for late night guests a special key is issued, do ask the receptionist for it.

What kind of shops are found around Sandakan Backpackers? Apart from the tour agent offices, many convenience stores like Genting Mas shopping mall, Guardian, Watson, Body Shop and also money changer are located nearby. On the ground level near the waterfront, there are four restaurants operating nightly, so searching for a good place for dinner is not a problem. For commuting in and around Sandakan, the town bus station is only a block away.

How to go there? Located at Sandakan town, so just go to the Sandakan Harbour Square at the sea front, Sandakan Backpackers is just the next block to the Swiss-Inn.
