Sepilok Jungle Resort

The orangutan, a close relative of a human being, is one of the main reasons for tourists who frequently visit Sandakan. Every day Sepilok Orangutan rehabilitation Centre attracts hundreds of visitors just for a glimpse of this extremely endangered wildlife. A few accommodations are located near the vicinity of the centre, but the nearest of them all, would have to be the Sepilok Jungle Resort, situated immediately next to the entrance of the centre. The resort offers a few kinds of accommodations to cater for various types of travellers, even the budget conscious ones are counted.

Sepilok Jungle Resort

From an aerial view one can see that the Sepilok Jungle Resort is a large complex located next to the forest reserve. The huge complex has a few buildings where one can find the guest rooms, cafeteria, gym and conference halls. Meanwhile the outdoor facilities encompass lagoons, gardens, a swimming pool, the camp site and a forest trail. Apart from the sixty rooms and the dormitories, Sepilok Jungle Resort can also hold retreats, seminars and special functions for up to two hundred persons. The resort proximity to the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), less than 2 km away, is also a plus point for staying, since visitors would need long hours to fully explore the RDC.

The deluxe, superior, standard and family rooms, all have air-conditioners and attached bathrooms, and these are located at the new wing. Housed under a long concrete building, all these rooms are not far from the swimming pool, gym and conference halls. The mattresses used here are of high quality, guests would definitely be able to enjoy a good night sleep. For the shower comfort the bathroom do have cold and hot waters. Coffee and Tea making facilities are also provided by the resort.

Banana Cafe & Restaurant

The Banana Cafe and Restaurant is separated from the new wing by a large lake garden. The special feature of the lake garden is a huge banyan tree where many of the forest birds perch at night. Birdwatching is a real possibility here. Guests will have to walk across this man-made lake through a 275 metre (900 feet) Kayu Belian walkway to the cafeteria. The buildings behind the cafeteria are where the older blocks lie, and this is where the dormitories, the fan rooms, and a few private rooms are situated. Both the private room and fan rooms have an attached bathroom, only persons staying at the dormitory have to use share showers and toilets. The share shower has hot water too. A common room with seats and television is for the convenient of those who stay at the dormitory.

Dormitory

The cafeteria opens daily from the early morning until night fall. After dinner around 10 pm the cafeteria will call it a day. Western and local cuisines are served here. From English breakfast to local fried noodle, there are quite a number of items on the menu. Soft drinks and beers are available too. Guest would like to take a seat near the lake, at times this might yield a spectacular view of a few types of hummingbirds which are often seen collecting nectar at a fruit tree nearby. An extended section of the cafe with about forty tables can be opened if 100 or more individuals are to dine here at any given one time.

A small open space on a higher ground next to the cafeteria has a few BBQ stoves made ready for guests who like to have barbeques parties. The BBQ place also has built-in cement tables and seats that were designed to look like wooden ones.

Swimming Pool

For recreation, swimming at the pool which has a standard Olympic size and surrounded by tropical trees, is a huge plus. Jump into the water and relax under the beautiful sunshine, and all stress is gone. The deck chairs surrounding the pool are great for those who want to get tanned and do some reading under the sun. As for children a swim at the smaller pool beside the large one will be more fun and safe. Health conscious individuals can make use of the gym and also spend some sweaty time in the steamed room or sauna. Above the gym room, there is a cafeteria which has a good bird's eye view of the swimming pool. Prior arrangement is needed if one wishes to use this cafeteria which has good interior setting.

Poolside Jungle Cafe

At night the adventurous individuals can take an hour forest walk around a loop which encircles the resort. With a keen eye one can spot quite a few creatures in the dark with the help of a touch light. Amphibians, insects, small reptiles and even owls can be spotted. For the karaoke enthusiasts, singing can be arranged at the conference hall. Free Wifi service are possible at the reception office and its nearby area. Transportation to the city and airport can also be arranged at the reception office.

Sepilok Jungle Resort also runs a travel agency called Sepilok Tropical Wildlife Adventure (STWA). It has two offices, one is located at the older part of the city, where as, the other one is situated at a corner shoplot at the Sandakan Harbour Waterfront. Tour packages to Kinabatangan river, Selingan island, Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, Gomantung Cave and Australian War Memorial can be booked here. Almost all tourist destinations in the Sandakan region are covered by STWA, truly a one stop inbound travel agency.

How to go there? AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines have daily flights to Sandakan from Kota Kinabalu or Kuala Lumpur. From Sandakan one can take public transports, bus or taxi, to Sepilok Jungle Resort which is about 23km away. For the self-drive individuals, whether the starting point is at the city or the airport, just look for the North road and travel east. Eventually the North road will link up with the Labuk Bay Road. Look out for a big roundabout with a few big orangutans cement figurines, and then turn into Sepilok Road. Sepilok Jungle Resort is just about 4 km away.
