Adjacent to the Kabili Forest Reserve and just 800 metres away from the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, lies this classy and charming accommodation called Sepilok Forest Edge Resort. This establishment used to run a mere budget accommodation located away from the present compound and it was called Labuk B & B. Since moving to the present premise which have more rooms, chalets and better facilities the establishment has chosen to stick with the new name. This resort is well planned. The wooden chalets are placed apart from each other which ensures good privacy. These chalets also blend in very well with the surrounding forest. Budget option like dormitory is available too. Staying for a few days here will allow guests to take in the beautiful surroundings of the green forests, as well as having ample times to explore the nearby orangutan centre and the Discovery Rainforest Centre.

Located at the Long House, a wooden building on stilts, is the dormitory and double room. The dormitory room is quite spacious with two beds in each room, and a fan. Guests who stay at the dormitory will have to use the common shower and toilet. The double room has a queen sized bed and comes with an attached bathroom that has hot and cold water showers. A large balcony at the Long House entrance, where eight rattan chairs and two rattan coffee tables for the comfort of the guests, allow them to sit down and enjoy the surrounding forest view.

A total of 12 chalets are available for rent at this resort. The standard chalets, nine units all together, are divided into two types: queen sized bed or twin beds. The standard chalets also come with an attached bathroom. The deluxe chalet with a queen sized bed is much more spacious than the standard chalet. The washroom is also more luxurious, it comes with a spa bath. Couples will find the standard and deluxe chalets very suitable and comfortable. For parents with one or two young kids, the Family Chalet will be ideaI. The Family chalet has one queen sized bed and a single bed, while the washroom has a bath tub. All these chalets have air-conditioners, fan, and hot water shower. Quality rattan chairs are placed at the balconies , where guests can sit down, relax, and absorb the wonderful forest view.

For a small group or a large family the Superior Chalet would be perfect. This chalet looks like a big bungalow from afar. It has a large living room, a dining area, a kitchen and two bed rooms. Guests can have a leisure time at the living room which comes with sofa seats and a television. Self catering is a possibility, since a kitchen with standard cooking equipments are provided. One of the bed rooms has twin beds, and the other one has a queen sized bed and a single bed. Both the bed rooms have its own wash rooms. All the rooms are air conditioned, which helps to keep everyone cool in the tropics.

The Cafeteria at Sepilok Forest Edge Resort

The cafeteria, where the reception office is located as well, is a good addition to the resort. Its open air concept under a roof gives a nice feeling as if the guests are dining in the forests. Trees and plants are in close proximity. Its wooden floor is soft, smooth and always clean, since guests are not allowed to wear shoes in here. The place is decorated with garden tables and chairs, as well as rattan tables and chairs. At night the yellow lighting gives the place a nice atmosphere. The types of food served here are simple Chinese, Western and some local style cooking. For drinks, local coffee, tea, soft drinks and beers are available. The restaurant opens from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm.

About 60 meters away from the cafeteria is the outdoor jacuzzi, where guests can dip in after a hot day walk around the forests. A well kept small animal farm is found not far from the Superior Chalet. There are animals like deer, goats, cows and Tembadau, a local Borneo buffalo. The resort also has a forest trail that goes in a loop. An hour night walk around the trail might find forest creatures like amphibians, insects, lizards and also owls. Kinabatangan river cruise and other tours can also be arranged by Sepilok Forest Edge Resort.

How to go there? AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines have daily flights to Sandakan from Kota Kinabalu or Kuala Lumpur. From Sandakan one can take public transports, bus or taxi, to Sepilok Forest Edge Resort which is about 24km away. For the self-drive individuals, whether the starting point is at the city or the airport, just look for the North road and travel east. Eventually the North road will link up with the Labuk Bay Road. Look out for a big roundabout with a few big orangutans cement figurines, and then turn into Sepilok Road. Just before the entrance to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, take a left turn to the Rambutan road, the resort is about 800 metres away on the right.
