Funky Town

February 22, 2010 By: olombon Category: Eating Out, Local, Restaurant, Western

If you happen to pass by Damai Commercial Centre or need a quiet place for meal, why not give Funky Town a go. For the 80s folks, you may remember “Funky Town” as a hit song in the 80s disco era. Now fast forward two decades into the noughtie, Funky Town is a nice restaurant and bar, that serves simple western and local cuisines. Guests can dine at the outside tables or enjoy the cooler air-conditioned interior. The interior design can be described as moderate, except for the right side entrance, which is a heaven for music lovers, especially those who are into the 60s to 80s music scene. The owner also has a good collection of records, and some of these records are on display on the wall. In today’s digital world, it is nice to see this yesteryear vinyl records still working properly, as sweet music is still played on a turntable. The management also welcomes guests to bell out a song or two, with a guitar provided on stage.

If you ask KKLites to have lunch or dinner at Kota Kinabalu Central Market, many of them will wink at you for even suggesting the place. For a long time now and for many of us, dirty, dark alley, hot and a very run down place are projected in our mind when thinking of or talking about the eateries on the first floor of Central Market. Some of us even swears not to go there ever.

But now all that has changed, and thanks to a Korean couples now we found a grade “A” restaurant right at the north end on the first floor of Central Market. The place was extensively renovated just a few months ago and it looks like something you see in Asian Food Channel (Astro’s programme) “Restaurant Makeover”. Starting with a new name, new design and look, air-condition, fully tiles, classy tables and chairs, plus a new menu on foods, everything here is brand new. Now is the time to revisit the age old Central Market and enjoy a good meal and posh atmosphere at this new restaurant, Opulence Point. This restaurant also has a good view of the fish market and the waterfront below.

The Lintas Plaza is some 15 minutes drive away from Kota Kinabalu, and is an eatery heaven when night falls. Clarence’s Home Grill is one of the fine restaurants at Lintas Plaza that offers a nice and cool atmosphere for fine dinning. It has a very English interior design. Wooden tables and chair, red and black checker table cloths, nice wall pictures, quiet atmosphere, and very soft lighting. All these make Clarence’s Home Grill a wonderful place to enjoy a hearty Western Cuisine.
