Kota Kinabalu was formerly known as Jesselton, and it is a rather young city with only about one hundred years of history. Jesselton came into administration at the turn of the 20th Century. The Kota Kinabalu Heritage Walk is centred around three areas, namely Gaya Street, Beach Street and Jesselton Point. This is a relativitely easy walk that will take about 2 to 3 hours. The best place to start the KK Heritage Walk would be the town padang, which cuts into Signal Hill. Located at the back of the State Library which in turn was next to the City Hall Building. Important events, games, parades, and even horse racing had been staged on this field in the past, and it is still being used for important events until this very day.

The Sabah Museum Complex is located on a small hill called the Old Place Hill (Bukit Istana Lama), below the foothill lies the Sembulan river and with the Sabah State government administration complex on the other side of the river. The Old Palace Hill has a magnificent look on the surrounding areas with Queen Elizabeth Hospital on one side, while the State Mosque, Sutera Harbour and the South China Sea on the other side. In this area of 43.3 acres of lush green forest, the Sabah Museum Complex consists of the Museum Proper, Science and Education Centre, ethnobotanic garden, zoological garden and the Heritage Village.

The Sabah Museum main building is easily recognizable with its unique shape roof top, which is designed after a traditional Rungus Longhouse. The Museum Proper houses a few collection of ceramics, artifacts and Sabah’s history. The entrance to the Museum Proper is displayed with a 50 feet long Bryde’s whale’s skeletons, which met its misfortune at the shallow sea of Gaya Island a few years back. The Time Tunnel is a show case of Sabah prehistorical times to the more recent history right after Sabah joined the Malay Federation. Before 1900 most of the local history is in written form, and from the twenty century onwards the history comes alive with many black and white pictures.
