Kipandi Butterfly Park

Talk about rare butteflies, beetles and orchids, why not pay a visit to Kipandi Butterfly Park. Located just 36 km away from Kota Kinabalu, about 40 minutes by car, this is the nearest butterfly parks in the region. On the way to Kipandi Butterfly Park at Kampung Moyog via the Penampang-Tambunan road visitors will be treated with a scenic view of the Crocker Range where lush green forests and rolling hills are the common sight. At the entrance of Kipandi Butterfly Park, at an altitude of 700 metres, vistors are greeted by the cool air from the Crocker Range. The Kipandi Butterfly Park consists of three sections: the butterfly enclosure, the flora garden and the insectarium. A friendly ranger will also be provided to help visitors to spot and name the various rare butterflies and plants.

Kinabalu Park & Poring Hot Spring Day Trip

Mt. Kinabalu always looks magnificent and magestic on a cloudless day, and Mt. Kinabalu also acts as a beautiful back drop for the coastal region in and around Kota Kinabalu. A visit to Kota Kinabalu without visiting Mt. Kinabalu National Park is almost considered a crime, that is how closely related this city to the mountain is, when it comes to names. While it is not possible for every visitor to climb Mt. Kinabalu, as the park can only accommodate a limited number of climbers on any given day. But for a visit to Kinabalu Park Headquarters and Poring Hot Spring there are no such limit, every one is welcome. Most of the inbound tour agents have Kinabalu Park Day Trip on top of their list, since this is also the number one destination in Sabah.

The forests of Kinabalu Park are very rich in flowers and plants, an estimated of 5,000 flowering plants had been catalogue to present day, and many more new species are till waiting to be discover. Wild orchids are abundant, as many of the wild orchids can be seen growing on top of the tree branches.

One of the most popular plants at Kinabalu Park, has to be the pitcher plants and also go by the name Nepenthes. There are about 9 species of pitcher plants at Kinabalu forests, and most of the pitchers plants can be found at the altitude of 2,702 m to 3,200 m. A few species of the pitchers plants have the ability to eat small insects alive with its pitcher.

The delightful rhododendrons has the biggest family of flowers in the Kinabalu forest, and they come in many attractive colours from white, red, yellow, pink, purple, to orange. Tree ferns also thrive in this forest.

Lok Kawi Wildlife Park

The Lok Kawi Wildlife Park covers about 280 acres of land, and at the moment 60 acres of the land have been utilized for the wildlife park and the botanical garden. The park has more than 100 species of mammals including birds, which are kept in captivity. Animals like the Bornean Pygmy Elephants, Orangutans, Proboscis Monkey, Borneo’s Rhino and Sun bear, which are native to Sabah, they are the main attraction here. The park is jointly developed and managed by the Sabah Wildlife and the Forestry Department. Located about 25km away from Kota Kinabalu City, the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park can be easily accessible by either the old Penampang-Papar road via Donggongon town or the Putatan-Papar road.

Elephants Dancing

Bornean Pygmy Elephant is the world’s smallest elephant. DNA anlaysis showed that Borneo’s elephants were isolated about 300,000 years ago from their cousins on mainland Asia. Since then, the elephants become smaller with relatively large ears, longer tails and straight tusks. Bornean Pygmy Elephants are also known to be rather tame and mild-tempered compared to others Asian elephants.
